1. Purpose

The Midhurst Jazz, Food & Blues Festival is committed to delivering a vibrant cultural celebration that supports environmental, social, and economic sustainability. We believe great festivals should leave lasting memories—not lasting damage.

This policy outlines our principles, targets, and operational commitments to reduce environmental impact, support our local economy, and inspire positive change through culture.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all festival operations, including planning, programming, procurement, site build and breakdown, food and drink provision, waste management, and stakeholder engagement (volunteers, artists, suppliers, venues, sponsors, and attendees).

3. Key Sustainability Objectives

A. Environmental Responsibility

Reduce Waste:

  • Eliminate single-use plastics where possible.

  • Provide clearly marked recycling, composting, and waste bins on-site.

  • Track and publicly report waste volumes post-event.

Lower Emissions:

  • Prioritise local suppliers and vendors to minimise transport emissions.

  • Encourage public transport, cycling, and walking.

Minimise Energy Use:

  • Use energy-efficient lighting and power sources where available.

  • Avoid diesel generators where grid access is available.

Green Procurement:

  • Prefer sustainable, ethical, and local products.

  • Encourage vendors to source local and seasonal ingredients.

B. Social Responsibility

Local Economy:

  • Prioritise local traders, artists, and suppliers.

  • Promote Midhurst as a sustainable visitor destination.

Access and Inclusion:

  • Ensure venues and events are physically accessible.

  • Provide clear signage.

  • Keep a portion of tickets free or low-cost for disadvantaged groups.

C. Governance & Transparency

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Share sustainability expectations with vendors and partners.

  • Train volunteers and staff in key sustainable practices.

  • Include a sustainability clause in all supplier agreements.

4. Communication & Accountability

This policy will be shared via:

  • Festival website and marketing materials

  • Vendor onboarding packs

  • Volunteer briefings

  • Local press and community groups

Progress and updates will be reviewed annually and published online.
